Deadlines

Deadlines can be both a boon and a bane.

If you have to produce a piece of written work at a specific time, a deadline can concentrate the mind wonderfully.  I've always found it so.

If, on the other hand, you are working, as I have often been, under pressure to produce something at a specific time and you keep on getting silly requests and phone calls, the deadline can turn into a monster with ten heads.  The work produced could be a clean floor, a meal or just a letter.  It doesn't matter what it is.  But pressure produces stress and stress is poison for the system.

This week has been crazy.  I thought I'd get lots of time to find myself and read and write when the kids returned to school after the school holidays.  But it just didn't happen.  The first reason was the rooms I use and look after in the house where we live were in a bad state.  There was a lot of dust and cobwebs and cleaning to be done.  Secondly, there is a backlog of sorting out to be done.  The ki…
